A decision on the preferred route for a long-awaited bypass scheme is expected early next year, the Highways Agency has announced.
Plans to re-route the notorious A64 away from Rillington will result in a substantial reduction in traffic passing through the North Yorkshire village.
Each of the three route options for the new road would have environmental effects - and further talks about the various agencies involved are to be held.
The Highways Agency set out details of the three potential schemes at a recent public exhibition in the village, when local residents had a chance to comment on the options.
Project manager David Phillips said: "A number of environmental issues, such as the effects on heritage and ecology, have to be discussed in more detail before a recommendation on the way forward can be made.
"I am aware there is a great deal of interest locally in this project, but it is important that all issues are explored thoroughly before a decision is made."
