Thieves snatch charity boxes

Two charity boxes, containing about £40, and badges promoting guide dogs and the Blue Cross animal welfare centre, were stolen from the reception area of a veterinary surgery at East End, Sedgefield, between 9.15am and 12.30pm yesterday.

LAMP TAKEN: A 7ft green lamp worth £250 was stolen from outside the Mill Race pub, in Wolsingham, on Boxing Day, between 3.30pm and 9pm. The lamp resembles an old fashioned street light. Anyone with information about the theft should contact PC Dawn Clarke, of Crook police, on (01388) 762011.

CASH STOLEN: Thieves escaped with about £925 in cash after breaking into Bishop Auckland Cricket Club early on Thursday. Anyone with information about the theft should contact Bishop Auckland police on (01388) 603566.

BLOOD DONORS: A session for blood donors is being held at King James I College, South Church Road, Bishop Auckland, between 3pm and 9pm on Thursday, January 10.

HOUSE CLOSED: Silverdale House, Newton Aycliffe, will be closed for extensive refurbishment from Monday until further notice.

HOTEL SERVICE: The Christian Life Centre will be holding services in the Prince Bishop Suite at Redworth Hall Hotel, tomorrow, at 10.30am and 6pm, while its premises at Woodham, Newton Aycliffe, are being refurbished. The congregation will meet at Greenfield School from Sunday, January 6, until further notice.

SHIRT DESIGN: A two-day workshop on creating winter designs on T-shirts for 12-year-olds and over is being held at Darlington Arts Centre, on January 5 and 12, from 10.30am to 3.30pm. Participants should take a white T-shirt or pillow case with them. The cost of the workshop is £20. Places must be booked by calling (01325) 486555.

CAROLS SUCCESS: The University of the Third Age in Darlington raised £120 when members sang carols at the Morrisons store, Morton Park, on December 21, supported by the Meltones Male Voice Choir and Blackwell Ladies' Choir. The money raised will be given to the Darlington Memorial Hospital appeal to set up a digital retinal photography system
