A POOL enthusiast is trying to resurrect the Newton Aycliffe Superleague team.

The town has been represented in the Superleague for a number of years, playing against other towns in the area.

But interest has dwindled over the past few years and the few remaining members moved to Kirk Merrington to play as Aycliffe A.

All except Gary Spooner, who wanted to retain a team in the town.

He said: "For the last couple of years the Aycliffe team has got slacker and slacker for the simple reason that people don't want to travel on a Sunday night.

"And the new world pool rules were introduced, which everybody wasn't happy with, so they started dropping out."

Mr Spooner approached Paul Wade, landlord of the Iron Horse pub, who agreed to offer his premises as a base for the team.

An appeal for players brought a good response, and Mr Spooner now has a dozen people interested in joining the squad.

He said: "Pool is still popular in the town. It's just a problem with these new rules because a lot of people in the Aycliffe leagues are older players and they don't want to change."

Mr Spooner is still looking for players, who need to be registered by January 6, and is also hoping to find a local minibus or taxi firm willing to provide transport to away games.
