A CYCLING club which is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary is appealing for new members.

Bishop Auckland Cycling Club was formed in 1952 and still has a host of long-serving members, but feels the time is right to attract new blood.

Although several members are former racing cyclists, a few of whom still compete locally, the club is not simply a racing club.

Member Bill Caveny said: "We have weekly runs which leave Bishop Auckland Market Place on Sunday mornings, at 9.30am.

"The runs cover 50 to 60 miles and are at a realistic speed. There is usually a caf stop and it is club policy that nobody is left behind."

The club incorporates the Durham Dales section of the Cyclists' Touring Club and it is affiliated to the British Cycling Federation and Road Time Trials Council.

Mr Caveny said: "Riding with like-minded cyclists opens up a completely new aspect of the pastime and many new members have been amazed at the wonderful local knowledge of some of the more experienced members.

"South-West Durham is first-class cycling terrain, all that is required is a road worthy bicycle and a reasonable standard of fitness."

A social event takes place at The Ship Inn, in Middlestone Village, on the last Thursday of each month, starting at 8pm.

Another highlight is the annual weekend away, which is usually a youth-hostel tour.

A mid-week ride on Tuesday evenings, taking in about 30 miles and starting at 6pm in Bishop Auckland Market Place, has also recently been set up.
