CHARITIES in the North-East are £1,500 better off thanks to the skills of big-hearted breadmakers.

The bakers, who work at Warburtons, in Newburn, Newcastle, have won the Derrick Warburton Cup for the quality of their bread buns.

The cup also brings an award of £750 for the bakery which the breadmakers have matched, so £1,500 will be donated to North-East charities.

Bakery manager Darren Bond said: "We are the best selling baker in the region, so it's great to be able to give something back.

"We will decide where to donate the money in the New Year and organisations that can prove they have done a lot to help themselves will come top of the list."

The cup was presented to Newcastle employees by Derrick Warburton, head of the family and a direct descendant of Thomas Warburton, who founded the bakery in Bolton, Lancashire, in 1876
