A CONFERENCE to discuss ways of developing and promoting the historic railway line between Darlington and Bishop Auckland has taken place in Shildon.

The event, which involved community representatives from Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Bishop Auckland and Shildon, was held to gain stronger support for the Heritage Line, leading to better services and facilities.

The project is being supported by the national, non-profit making Association of Community Rail Partnerships and is sponsored by the Strategic Rail Authority and the Countryside Agency.

Dr Paul Salveson, association director, said: "Where community-rail partnerships have been established we have seen a steady growth in passengers using the line.

"The same approach can work for The Heritage Line. The proposed establishment of the National Railway Museum's centre at Shildon is a particularly exciting opportunity for the line."

Dr Salveson outlined the project, which was followed by six discussion groups covering themes including community arts projects at stations and links with the Weardale railway project. He said: "We want to get practical ideas for how we can start a renaissance of the line."
