A CHURCH organist raised almost £3,000 for BBC Children In Need appeal after a whirlwind tour of the country.

Christopher Nixon plays the church organ at Christ Church, Coatham, Redcar, east Cleveland, every Sunday. He accepted a challenge from BBC Radio Cleveland which took him on a marathon journey around all 53 cathedrals in England in less than a week.

The primary school teacher from Bankfields School, Eston, near Middlesbrough, travelled 1,850 miles to achieve his goal and on some days played in nine cathedrals.

BBC Radio Cleveland managing editor Andrew Glover yesterday accepted a cheque from Mr Nixon and said: "This was a great idea and a fantastic achievement. I am delighted that Christopher has helped us in raising much-needed funds for BBC Chidren In Need, which is a high point for both our listeners and our staff. It is a great opportunity for us to connect with our community and raise serious money for a good cause at the same time."

Latest figures show that BBC Radio Cleveland has already raised £47,264 for the BBC's 2001 Children In Need Appeal.
