Sunderland crashed out of the FA Cup to first division West Brom, losing 2-1 at the Stadium of Light.
Things looked good for the Premiership side when Kevin Phillips ended a six-game goal drought with a superb overhead kick in the 12th minute.
Sunderland seemed to settle down but West Brom equalised from the penalty spot through Neil Clement after danger man Jason Roberts had been fouled in the box by centre-half Stanislav Varga.
The goal seemed to inspire the visitors who twice hit the woodwork through Adam Chambers and Derek McInnes before going in level at half-time.
The Baggies kept hustling Sunderland who lost their early rhythm and it was no surprise when Andy Johnson grabbed what was to prove the winning goal in the 61st minute.
