Alan Shearer grabbed his sixth goal in as many games as Newcastle edged nervously past first division Crystal Palace in their FA Cup third round tie at St James' Park.
Shearer struck his 13th of the season with a thumping a 20-yard drive after Nolberto Solano had rolled a free-kick into his skipper's path six minutes before half-time.
But the Magpies made hard work of their win and had to wait until the 76th minute for the clincher.
Chilean Clarence Acuna, a 54th minute replacement for the injured Gary Speed, crashed home his third goal of the season after good work by Aaron Hughes.
