A NEW school with facilities for community learning is to help breathe new life into a run-down area.
Sunderland City Council has approved plans for Valley Road Primary School, at Hendon.
The new building will replace the area's existing junior and infant schools, and will have facilities for the community, including computers and training and adult learning areas.
It will be built in Robinson Terrace and Commercial Road and is to get £1.9m from the £54m Back on the Map project that is regenerating the Hendon area.
The project will also give the school a £200,000 grant each year for ten years.
The new school was proposed by education chiefs as a way of getting rid of the 7,500 surplus places in Wearside's primary schools.
