THE time limit for the public to apply to become members of a new committee being established to maintain high standards of conduct within Cleveland Police Authority has been extended.

The setting up by the authority of a new standards committee is part of the Government's measures to establish a new ethical framework for all public authorities and there are two places on the committee for independent members who are not on the police authority itself.

Lead officer for the police authority, Peter Riley, said it was decided to extend the deadline for applications to January 10, because a number of people had expressed an interest and it is expected more will get in touch now the holiday period is over.

He said: "We advertised for applications last month and received a number of expressions of interest and several more people have been in touch over the past couple of days.

"We want to give as many people as possible the opportunity to put their names forward, which is why we have decided to keep the opportunity to apply open for a further week."

The committee's role will include advising on and monitoring codes of conduct and drafting a scheme of allowances for police authority members.

The committee will normally meet on a quarterly basis, and travelling and subsistence allowances will be paid to independent members.

Applications should be sent to the Cleveland Police Authority, Police Headquarters, Ladgate Lane, Middlesbrough, TS8 9EH, or by contacting (01642) 301767.
