A MILLENNIUM tree is finally taking root in a North-East churchyard.
The tree, a cutting taken from a 2,000 year old yew, has been planted at St Cuthbert's Church, Darlington.
The sapling was given to the church during a service in Durham Cathedral in October 1999, when it was 6in high.
It was one of three Millennium projects undertaken by the church.
The tiny tree has been tended by parishioners for the past two years and was recently planted at the east side of the church, near the river.
It is hoped the tree will reach 30ft by 2050 and will be a permanent reminder of the Millennium celebrations
