Meeting to get service on line

Phil Willis, the Liberal-Democrat MP for Harrogate has called a meeting at the White Hart Hotel, on January 24, concerning Arriva train services. He is particularly concerned with the Leeds-Harrogate-York service which affects commuters and the town's vital conference trade.

YOUTH BOOST: Youngsters in remote parts of North Yorkshire are to benefit from a New Year award of almost £6,000 from the newly-formed charity, Ryedale Child and Youth Project, which was set up as part of the local Regeneration Partnership.

PUBLIC SPORTS: The Roman Catholic school, Ampleforth College, has submitted plans to build an all-weather hockey and football pitch. The pitch, which would enhance existing facilities, would also be open to residents.

NIGHT FLYING: Student pilots will be carrying out essential night-flying exercises from the bases at Linton-on-Ouse and Church Fenton between January 14 and 17. Flying should be finished by midnight. The bad weather reserve nights will be January 21 to 24. "Every effort will be made to keep noise disturbance to a minimum," said a spokesman.

SEWER WORK: Motorists in Hambleton are being warned about the temporary closure of North Bank Lane in Stillington from today until Friday. The closure is due to the construction of a sewer. An alternative route for traffic will be signed.

CROSSING CLOSURE: The level crossing at Nether Poppleton, near York, will be closed from 10.30pm on January 17 to 6am the following day to allow track renewal works to be carried out.

CHARITY CASH: A themed dressing-up day and various other events have so far helped students at Northallerton College to raise more than £900 for Children in Need. With some pledges still to come in the final total is expected to be well over £1,000.
