BOBBY ROBSON has good news for England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and a warning for Newcastle United's Premiership rivals.

"Just wait till you see Kieron Dyer when he's fully fit what a player he is going to be,'' said the Newcastle manager.

Midfield gem Dyer made his sixth start in only two-and-a-half weeks in Saturday's FA Cup win over Crystal Palace, after almost ten months out with a serious shin injury.

"He's been amazing,'' said Robson.

"He's done phenomenally well. He's some player and when the kid gets really fit, you'll see how good he is.

"He hasn't played for ten months and we've crammed all this football into him.

"When the games are spaced out and he can train in between, you'll see him at his best.''

Eriksson saw 23-year-old Dyer produce a high-energy performance at Old Trafford last Wednesday when Newcastle lost 3-1 to in-form champions Manchester United.

The £20m-rated starlet is almost certain to figure in the Swede's World Cup squad, despite his lengthy lay-off.

But Robson is still fearful of Dyer breaking down.

"We just have to look after him now and give him a bit a of a rest,'' said Robson, who brought Dyer off when victory was assured against Palace.

"In training on Friday, he was like a three-legged dog.

"When I took him off, he was at his best. That's because he's still getting his rhythm going after being out for ten months.

"I wanted to take him off midway through the second half, but I couldn't because Gary Speed had gone off injured.

"I brought on Clarence Acuna for Speed and he did very well for us.

"He got a goal, fought hard for the club and showed everybody that he wants to be in the team.

"Once we were 2-0 up, I could take Kieron off.

"It was important to save Kieron - I was looking to our game against Leeds on Saturday.

"We had eight games in December and we've had two already this month, so I'm going to give the players who have been involved most a couple of days off this week.''

Dyer is vital to Robson, with Robert Lee out with a recurrence of groin trouble and Speed doubtful for the visit of leaders Leeds, who Newcastle beat 4-3 at Elland Road last month.

"Gary will want to play because it's his old club, but he has a swollen ankle and might struggle,'' admitted Robson.

Skipper Alan Shearer believes his side, who have lost their last two League games to Chelsea and Manchester United, can draw encouragement from their display at Old Trafford.

"I thought we matched Man. United in a lot of departments,'' said Shearer.

"We've watched the video and if you take the goals away, there wasn't a lot between us.

"The disappointing thing is that we haven't defended well in the last two games.

"When you're playing against Hasselbaink and Gudjohnsen, and van Nistelrooy and Scholes, you won't get away with it.

"We were punished for sloppy defending - and that's not a dig at the back four, because we attack as 11 and defend as 11.

"I still don't think we can win the League, but if we beat Leeds again, we've a chance of going back to the top.''
