ICY pavements prevented many pensioners in Darlington from leaving their homes last weekend.
A resident, who asked not to be named, claimed that Darlington Borough Council had not gritted the pavements in Stockton Road, and that his elderly relatives, who live nearby, did not want to risk injury by venturing outside.
He said: "My family were prisoners in their homes. The pavements were a death trap."
A council spokesman said: "A team of gritters will be out when conditions are icy but their resources are limited. We will grit the main roads and pavements in the town centre but we cannot cover all the pavements.
"We would advise people who live in areas which are particularly icy to take care."
