HOUSEHOLDS across Sedgefield borough are being urged to take part in a Yellow Pages recycling campaign.

The initiative will start when the new edition of the directory, sporting chicks on the front cover, is delivered during the next few weeks.

The campaign aims to collect thousands of old Yellow Pages for recycling, through schools.

The Directory Recycling Scheme will award £500 to the school collecting the most directories per pupil.

Selected schools will be invited to work with artists and the county's WasteWise project to use the directories to recreate the yellow brick road and sculptures of Wizard of Oz characters such as the Tin Man and Dorothy.

Every school taking part will be given a copy of the Wizard of Oz on video.

All directories will eventually go to Foreman Recycling in Spennymoor and be turned into animal bedding.

Oliver Priestley-Leach, Sedgefield's waste management officer, said: "The main aim of the competition is to show that recycling can be fun. Hopefully, after taking part, people will be inspired to recycle other materials."

Old Yellow Pages can be put out for the normal kerbside paper collection, or taken to Sedgefield's recycling banks
