Tommy Taylor has called on Darlington fans across the country to help play their part in securing a fourth round FA Cup tie with Newcastle.

Since Sunday's draw Quakers fans have been anticipating the derby clash, but Peterbrough must be beaten in the third round before plans for the visit of the Magpies can be made, and Feethams boss Taylor believes Darlington supporters will be vital next Tuesday night.

Barry Fry's Posh side travel to Feethams next week biddng for the right to host a money-spinning tie with Newcastle on January 26, and Taylor said: "I'd ask every Darlington fan in the country to come out and win that third-round tie for us.

"If we can't fill our stadium now with such a huge game at stake, then when can we?

"I can't think of a bigger game and if that draw hasn't picked the boys up, then they shouldn't be playing football."

"The tie would be magnificent for Darlington, good for Newcastle and great for North-East football. But we have a very tough game to get over before we can think about the fourth round.

"I would love to get the chance to welcome Newcastle to our stadium.

" They still have a couple of my YTS boys with them and that makes the draw extra special for me.

"I used to call Robert Lee my little baby when he was a young lad at Charlton and Warren Barton was another kid I had under my wing."

If Quakers beat Barry Fry's side, the fourth round tie with Newcastle will go ahead at Feethams. They might have considered a switch to St James' Park, but FA rules no longer allow it.

Chairman George Reynolds said: "We have to think about these things and you don't know what to do for the best - there's a lot of money involved and you have to do what is right.

"I think we will have our work cut out, but Shearer will have his work cut out as well because all our lads know where all the pot holes are on the the pitch!"

Darlington's reserve side played the first of two games in a week yesterday when they lost 3-0 at Bury with Adam Reed beginning his comeback from a knee injury.

The second-string are also in action tomorrow when Lincoln come to Feethams (7pm). The first team have a friendly tonight at New Ferens Park against Brian Honour's Durham City (7.30).

As the team haven't been in action much because of postponements, Taylor believes City will give his players a good test ahead of Saturday's trip to Kidderminster.

The postponed clash at home to Cheltenham, rearranged for March 12, has been brought forward to February 12 (7.30).

The supporters' meeting planned for tonight has been cancelled.
