A TOURISM guide is being launched today to attract visitors to the region.

Tourism bosses hope that a publicity campaign will provide a boost to businesses and communities in the Yorkshire Dales hit by effects of foot-and-mouth disease.

The 2002 guide is being launched at the Dales countryside museum, in Hawes, by Angela Baker, who led Rylstone WI to fame with a calendar of nude WI members.

The brochure was produced by the Dales joint promotions initiative, a partnership between Richmondshire and Craven district councils, Harrogate Borough Council, the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, Yorkshire Tourist Board, and South Lakeland and Eden district councils, in Cumbria.

Publication marked the start of a national advertising campaign to promote the Dales as a holiday destination. Advertising, including a television campaign, starts this month and runs until May, funded partly by a foot-and-mouth recovery grant from Yorkshire Forward.

An extra 20,000 copies of the guide were printed, and free advertising for accommodation proprietors brought in an additional 64 advertisers.

The 64-page colour guide includes a pull-out map of the Dales, information on attractions, crafts and events, and details of accommodation.
