POLICE are urging a good Samaritan who stopped at the scene of a fatal crash to get in touch.
The driver went to the aid of a woman whose car crashed into a lamppost and wooden fence after leaving the A19 northbound carriageway near Easington, east Durham, on New Year's Day.
The accident claimed the life of passenger Brian Cole, 45, of Abington Square, Cramlington, Northumberland.
The 22-year-old woman driver of the VW Passat and another passenger were also injured in the crash.
The good Samaritan was driving south in an estate car. He stopped and took the driver to Peterlee police station but did not leave any details.
PC Michael Thomas, of Durham Police's accident investigation unit, said he did not think the man saw the Passat leave the road, but officers needed to speak to him to complete their inquiries.
From his conversation with the woman, it is thought he works at a newsagents in the Hartlepool area.
He is described as tall, thin, and possibly in his fifties.
The accident investigation unit can be contacted at Durham Police headquarters on 0191-386 4929.
