PLANS are being put in place to make Stockton High Street a safer place for shoppers.
Stockton Borough Council and the police have drawn up a scheme to improve the pedestrianisation of the town centre.
It is difficult to enforce pedestrianisation at present because members of the public are often confused about where they may drive.
The new proposals would see all traffic, with the exception of buses, banned from the Castlegate side of the road all day.
On the northbound carriageway, all vehicles, except buses, would be banned from 9am to 5pm.
Between 9am and 5pm all vehicles, excluding buses and taxis, would be barred from the two bus-turning circles, except for access.
All permits and access documents will be withdrawn and Silver Street and Ramsgate will be closed at their junctions with the High Street.
The views of traders and businesses along the High Street are being sought.
