A NOTORIOUS Teesside drugs baron has been shot dead in Copenhagen.
John McCormick, 47, originally from Thorntree, Middlesbrough, was found in a stairwell outside his flat in the Danish capital on New Year's Eve at about 6.30am. A Foreign Office spokeswoman confirmed his death yesterday.
She said: "He was found on the morning of December 31. We understand that he was shot. Our consular staff have been in contact with the family and are ready to provide any further consular assistance that they might require.
"Our officials in Copenhagen are remaining in close contact with the police regarding their investigations."
Mr McCormick, a former docker who still has family in Middlesbrough, is reported to have died from a single shot from a 9mm handgun.
He went to live on the Costa del Sol in the 1990s where he ran a bar, but is thought to have moved to Denmark last year.
Copenhagen police were unavailable for comment yesterday.
