HUNDREDS of Wearside teachers are being given the chance to log on to the world of computers.
Sunderland City Council has won £750,000 of Government money to buy desk and laptop PCs for schools.
The funding is part of a national scheme to give teachers access to computers and help them develop IT skills.
David Staples, the council's assistant director of education, said: "It is excellent news because we think IT has a major role in helping youngsters achieve.
"Anything that improves the skill levels in that subject, particularly for teachers who may not be that confident with IT, is welcome."
Elizabeth Bowman, head of Southmoor School, Sunderland, said the move would help teachers who did not grow up computer literate.
"I know we will really welcome receiving any extra equipment to help us upgrade our skills," she said.
Headteachers without a computer will have priority, followed by teachers who do not have one.
