Sunderland boss Peter Reid has vowed to fight on, insisting he has no intention of walking out on the club.

"There's no chance I'd ever resign from this job or any job, it's not in my make-up," said Reid.

"This club is in a healthy state financially and it can go from strength to strength. Even when Peter Reid leaves - and I've got no plans to do that - it will be in a lot healthier position than when I came.

"I don't make any apologies for telling it how it is with a balanced view, it's time it was said. Let's look at the big picture.

"This club is in line to have its best three-season spell of finishes in the top flight since 1939 if we can finish in the top ten. That is fact in black and white."

However, disgruntled fans clearly aren't happy and last week's FA Cup defeat to first division West Brom was the final straw for some sections of the crowd, who were calling for Reid's resignation.

The Black Cats boss has been heavily criticised for some disastrous moves in the transfer market, most notably for French flop Lilian Laslandes, who last week joined Cologne on loan for the rest of the season.

With just 18 goals in the league so far, Reid is well aware where the problem lies.

Failed bids for Nicolas Anelka and Trevor Sinclair has further added to Reid's frustration but the former Man City boss insists the club is investing its finances in other equally vital areas.

He added: "I've had letters having a go and complaining about my signings. I'm not going to get every signing right.

"I've had more encouraging letters than those having a go and I think that tells you what the majority of fans think.

"I know fans will ask why more money isn't spent on signings but nowadays you've got to have the right infrastructure to attract the top players and we're developing ours with the new academy.

"Players are not going to come to our training complex at Whitburn, at times it's embarrassing."

Despite the clubs current plight, Reid remains optimistic.

He said: "We're only four points off Spurs in seventh. We've still got a chance of finishing seventh or better this season and that's with not having played well by our own admission."
