A CHURCH group has raised more than £2,600 for the Macmillan County Durham Appeal in just four days.
Fundraisers from Bishop Auckland Methodist Church handed a cheque to the charity - which announced it had broken through the £100,000 barrier.
Macmillan is raising £600,000 to cover the cost of providing County Durham with a specialist palliative care consultant and two more specialist cancer nurses, for the next three years.
If Macmillan is successful, the NHS will take over funding after that.
The Reverend Michael Thompson, minister at the Cockton Hill Road church, said the cash was collected in the car park of Morrisons supermarket, as shoppers viewed their nativity crib.
"We had an excellent response this year, especially as we did it in only four days. This is something that has really struck a chord with people," said Mr Thompson.
Caroline Peacock, for the Macmillan County Durham Appeal, said: "It is really encouraging that people are responding so well to our appeal."
