AREAS surrounding east Cleveland towns and villages are to be cleaned up, thanks to the creation of a Groundwork Trust.

The scheme, which is funded through Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's Neighbourhood Renewal Programme, is one of the country's leading environmental regeneration charities. It has a network of 50 local Trusts working in partnership with communities, councils and businesses to promote economic and social regeneration throughout the country.

Councillor David Walsh, leader of Redcar and Cleveland Council, said the scheme was part of a drive to clean up villages and towns across the borough.

"Groundwork Trust is a recognised body with a good track record in the North-East. It is just as important to make sure the areas around our estates are up to scratch as the estates themselves because the state of the environment tends to get reflected in the community."
