POLICE arrested two people in connection with an alleged assault on a man found dead in a County Durham house, it emerged yesterday.
The body of George William Rae, 36, who had been staying overnight with friends in Honister Place, Newton Aycliffe, was discovered by police on Tuesday morning.
They initially treated the death as suspicious, but the investigation was scaled down when a post-mortem examination, carried out by pathologist Dr James Sunter at Bishop Auckland General Hosp- ital, failed to establish a cause of death.
Two men, aged 31 and 28, both from Newton Aycliffe, were arrested, but were released on police bail on Wednesday once police were satisfied the alleged assault played no part in the death. They will be interviewed again at a later date.
Police are keeping an open mind on the cause of death until toxicology tests have been completed. One possibility they are considering is that the death may have been drugs related.
Little is known of Mr Rae, other than he was from Newton Aycliffe, but of no fixed abode.
