NEW primary schools being set up on Wearside are to get the latest in facilities for sports and the arts.
Sunderland City Council has won money from a Government fund to upgrade provision at the schools, which are being created to get rid of more than 7,500 unused places.
Paul Gowan, assistant head of facilities at the council's contracting services, said: "The money is primarily aimed at improving access to these facilities for the children.
"But they will also provide increased access to arts and sports activities for the community as a whole."
Farringdon Infant and Junior School will get a multi-use sports and arts hall, an arts room and storage area.
Quarry View Infant and Junior School will benefit from a sports and arts room and a floodlit multi-use games area.
A general refurbishment is on the cards for Hylton Castle Primary School and the neighbouring Felstead Special School along with enhanced arts and sports space, a floodlit games area and a performing arts area.
The George Washington Primary School and the Dubmire Infant and Junior School will each get a multi-use floodlit games area and an extended sports and arts hall.
