PRIMARY school pupils are celebrating after winning a health and safety quiz.

Swalwell Primary triumphed over competitors from seven other Gateshead primaries to lift the trophy for the annual Gateshead Council Children's Health and Safety quiz. The youngsters, aged seven to 11, beat last year's winners, Chopwell.

The teams were quizzed on topics including diet, nutrition, dental health, safety and fitness. They also took part in practical exercises and video clip rounds.

Other competitors were Lindisfarne Community, Glynwood Community, St John the Baptist RC, South Street Community, Blaydon West and Dunston Riverside Community schools.

The quiz was designed to test how much pupils had learnt when Gateshead Council's physical health and social education roadshow visited all the schools other than defending champions Chopwell.

Councillor David Napier, the cabinet member responsible for health, presented the Swalwell youngsters with their trophy.
