Newcastle ousted Leeds at the top of the Premiership as second half goals by Kieron Dyer and Craig Bellamy clinched victory in an explosive encounter at St James' Park.

Dyer, who spent nearly 10 months on the sidelines after undergoing two operations for a serious shin problem, struck on the hour.

And Bellamy, who had been guilty of a glaring miss, made the game safe three minutes from time.

Leeds' misery was compounded by the sending off of right-back Danny Mills for violent conduct after he kicked out wildly at Bellamy in the 70th minute.

Referee Graham Barber was kept busy, with nine players being booked in niggly contest.

Leeds made a lightning start when Alan Smith scored a breakaway goal after only 28 seconds.

But Newcastle drew level when centre back Michael Duberry headed into his own goal in the 21st minute, before Dyer and Bellamy ultimately made the difference.
