THREE areas of open space have been identified for development as residential care homes.
Darlington Borough Council has given notice of its intentions for the sites, all in the east of the town, and is in talks with potential providers.
The council has identified 3,170sq m of land at Hutton Avenue, 5,200 sq m at Hundens Park, and a 3,700sq m plot at East Haven.
A second plot of open land at East Haven, measuring 4,920sq m next to Yarm Road, has also been chosen for sheltered housing development.
Colin Morris, the council's social services director, said: "The council has been working for some time to identify suitable providers to build residential and nursing care homes in Darlington.
"We are in discussion with developers and this notice is part of the ongoing process."
Anyone who has any objections to the proposals can write expressing their views to: GL Metcalfe, Estates and Property Manager, Development and Environment Department, Town Hall, Darlington, DL1 5QT, no later than January 28
