WORK is to start soon on the construction of a £500,000 road bridge in Seaham.

Contractors PSB Construction (NE) will begin replacing the Cornelia Terrace Bridge, on the B1287, next Monday.

The work, which is expected to take 30 weeks to complete, will be phased so that the road remains open.

Temporary traffic lights will operate to keep traffic flowing, but pedestrians will have to use a diversion as the town centre walkway under the bridge will be closed.

Durham County Council's director of environment and technical services, Chris Tunstall, said: "The new bridge will be generally the same size as the existing one, but with the capacity to accommodate 40-tonne Euro lorries.

"Brick facing and stone copings that reflect the detail of the adjacent Marlborough Bridge will help improve the visual appeal of the new bridge."
