FAMILIES bursting with pride helped to celebrate the achievements of their loved ones at a ceremony for students with learning difficulties.

More than 300 people, some coming from as far away as Haltwhistle and Cramlington, in Northumberland, attended the Derwentside College presentation, at Consett Civic Centre.

The highly emotional event, organised by the students themselves, lasted three hours.

The students even made gifts, including a rocking horse and decorations, which went on sale at the end of the evening.

Albert Croney, director of curriculum at the college, presented certificates to more than 90 students.

He said: "I am delighted with the number of students whose hard work and enthusiasm has been officially recognised today. They have excelled with their coursework and personal development.
