LANE end refuse collections imposed across Hambleton during the foot-and-mouth crisis are to be lifted today.

District council officers have been advised by the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) that biosecurity measures are no longer necessary, apart from those farms still going through final cleaning programmes, in the process of restocking, or those still subject to Article 38 restrictions.

"Defra has confirmed North Yorkshire is now classed as a foot-and-mouth disease free county and there are no legal restrictions preventing refuse vehicles driving on to farms.

"However, their advice is that where farmers still have biosecurity measures, the disinfection of vehicles should still be carried out," said Councillor Arthur Barker, Cabinet spokesman on environmental health.

Farmers wishing to remain on lane end collections should call (01609) 776743.
