RARELY do people in the North-East have the chance to see a derby with a difference.

And if Darlington overcome Peterborough in the FA Cup Third Round tonight, that is exactly what will happen.

By overcoming Barry Fry's men, Third Division Quakers will have set up a plum tie with Premiership high-fliers Newcastle United, and that is why football fanatics from across the region should come out in support of Darlington tonight.

A capacity crowd at Feethams should give the home side the backing to push their Second Division opponents all the way - and hopefully claim the victory needed to earn a match against the Magpies.

A lot has been said about the possibility of Darlington chairman George Reynolds switching the clash with Bobby Robson's men to St. James' Park.

But regardless of the outcome of Reynolds' attempts, tonight's cup tie remains the first stumbling block and success should not be taken for granted.

Peterborough, under the guidance of the larger than life Barry Fry, will be tough opposition.

Posh may not be heading for their second promotion in three seasons, but they occupy a healthy position in the Second Division and visit Feethams on the back of two good victories.

So Darlington need the encouragement and support if they are to make Cup progress at the first time of asking against the London Road outfit.

If the hosts can get close to filling their 8,500 stadium, then surely that will boost the match-day squad who have the task of defeating Peterborough.

Darlington have faced one of the region's big three just twice in the FA Cup over the years.

The first time, in January 1985, Darlington upset Middlesbrough 2-1 in a Third Round replay after forcing a 0-0 draw at Ayresome Park three days earlier.

Two years later they were less fortunate when they were brushed aside 2-0 at Roker Park against Sunderland in the First Round.

It's the last season for Feethams, so let's make it a memorable one.

Quakers have never faced their other more glamorous neighbours, Newcastle, in a competitive match - all the more reason to go and buy a ticket for tonight's encounter.
