Mobile cricket pavilion stays

A CARAVAN which doubles as a cricket pavilion is expected to remain in place after councillors meet to discuss its future this week.

The cricket club at South Kilvington, near Thirsk, has made a retrospective application to Hambleton District Council for permission to site the caravan on its village pitch. The club is also seeking approval for a shed to provide a scoreboard, storage and toilet facilities.

CHURCH HOPE: District councillors are being urged to support a proposed extension to a village church. The Reverend Shirley Griffiths, vicar of East Cowton, near Northallerton, has applied to Hambleton District Council for permission to extend All Saints' Parish Church. If the bid is approved, a meeting room, kitchen and toilet facilities would be added to the Grade II listed building. The district council's planning committee is expected to give the scheme the go-ahead, on the recommendation of officers, when it meets on Thursday.

Flower SHOW: More than 100 displays by many of Britain's leading nurseries will feature at the 75th annual Harrogate Flower Show, which opens at the town's showground on April 25. Other features of the four-day show will include garden landscaping and design among many other things.

Flying high: Residents in the Linton-on-Ouse area have been warned there will be some unusual flying activity on Friday with the graduation ceremony for student pilots. Several aircraft will fly over the base between 9am and noon in tribute the students' efforts. There will also be a formation flypast of nine Tucano aircraft.

Antiques fair: An antiques and collectors' fair is to be held at the Merchant Adventurers' Hall in York on Saturday, from 9.30am to 4.30pm. Admission will be 80p.

Care seminar: The British Epilepsy Association will hold a regional seminar for health care professionals at the Ambassador Hotel, in Scarborough, on Thursday, February 21. It will look at ways of improving care. For details, contact Sharon Harvey on 0113-210 8800.

Film show: The Yorkshire Film Archive will be showing nostalgic clips of Ripon and Harrogate tomorrow night. The event, which starts at 8pm in Ripon leisure centre, will include images of Queen Victoria visiting Yorkshire. Guests are welcome and entry is £3.
