PENSIONERS with mental health problems will now be able to enjoy their sensory garden even more thanks to a charity donation.

William Salvin, the Northern representative for the charitable trust, The Country Landowners' Association, presented a cheque for £1,000 to Holmdale Villa, at Earl's House, in Durham, yesterday.

The money will go towards the villa's sensory garden, designed to give patients experiences of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste, and which opened last August.

The garden also provides a safe environment in which patients can walk around, as well as a relaxation area both for them and their relatives.

Sheila Hanson, ward sister at Holmdale Villa, and Kevin Stubbings, locality manager for old age psychiatry in County Durham and Chester-le-Street, received the cheque on behalf of the villa.

Ms Hanson said: "The staff at Holmdale Villa would like to thank The Country Landowners' Association for their very generous donation to the multi-sensory garden.

"The money will help us to develop the garden so that it continues to provide stimulation for older people."
