EXTRA cash is to be spent making further improvements to Darlington's cinema.

The Odeon, in Northgate - formerly the ABC - underwent a £117,000 facelift at the end of last year, opening on New Year's Day under its new name.

The revamp involved new seating in Screen One, improvements to the outside of the building, the installation of disabled toilets, and new carpets and decor throughout.

Assistant manager Darren Henderson said there were plans to fit a new sound system, better kiosk facilities, and overhaul the foyer.

"We are expecting large amounts of money to be spent in the next few weeks," he said.

"This is on top of the cash spent in the initial facelift, and could be up to half as much again.

"We won't be closing during the work. It will be business as usual and we hope to have it ready in time for the February half-term."

Mr Henderson said that the opening of the cinema as an Odeon at the start of the year coincided with the release of hit film Lord of the Rings, which brought in the crowds.

"Customers have been quite impressed with the work so far. The new computers have speeded things up and, when we get the new system for the new kiosk and booking office, that will help even more," he said.

"The continued rebrand and refurbishment should improve the business further, adding to customers' enjoyment, which is what it is all about."
