TWO youngsters could win the chance to be dignitaries for the day, thanks to a competition.

Darlington Borough Council is looking for a junior mayor and mayoress to take over official duties.

To win the chance to wear the mayoral chain, youngsters must write a 250-word essay called How I would like to celebrate the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

The competition is open to youngsters aged between nine and 11 years old who live within the borough.

Entries will be judged by the mayor, Isobel Hartley, and mayoress Lilian Elliot. The winners will be invited to be junior mayor and mayoress for the day, accompanied by their parents, on April 9.

The winners will accompany Councillor Hartley and Mrs Elliot on their duties, including visits to Darlington police and fire stations, a VIP lunch at Walworth Castle and a broadcast from the studios of Alpha Radio. There will also be a visit to Middlesbrough FC's training ground, at Hurworth, a visit to the closed-circuit television control room and afternoon tea in the Mayor's Parlour.

The winners will receive a framed photograph of themselves with Coun Hartley and Mrs Elliot.

Entries should be submitted, no later than March 22, to Iain Purdie, Mayoral Support Officer, Mayor's Parlour, Town Hall, Darlington.
