A WOMAN who has worked for St John Ambulance for 30 years is to receive an award for her dedication.

Edith Dodds, a pensioner from Darlington, is to be awarded the Order of St John.

The former Cleveland Bridge employee works as a volunteer at the St John Ambulance branch in Northgate, Darlington.

In previous years she helped with medical duties but is now treasurer and secretary.

She said: "I feel very honoured. I really enjoy working for St. John's. I enjoy helping people and going to different activities."

Miss Dodds will be honoured at a ceremony at Darlington Town Hall on March 14, when she will receive her award from the Lord Lieutenant of County Durham.

The Order of St John was founded in the 11th Century and comprises St John Ambulance and the Ophthalmic Hospital, Jerusalem.

Each award is approved by the Queen, who is the sovereign head of the order.
