A website and leaflet have been launched to give an insight to the fascinating heritage of part of the east Cleveland coastline.

Local people helped to put together information about the Coatham Coastline, as part of a heritage project organised by the Tees Valley Wildlife Trust.

The leaflet, and similarly the website, gives an overview of the rich mix of heritage in the Coatham area, from its days as a medieval settlement, through its industrial heritage, wartime defence role and its maritime history. It also includes information about the area's important natural history.

Jane Ellis, of the Wildlife Trust, said: "The heritage programme evolved from a European-funded project looking at the wider Coatham and South Gare area, and how it could be enhanced and managed to provide a greater asset to the local area.

"While consulting local people about their aspirations for the area, it became clear that many residents were quite interested in finding out more about the history of the area," she added.

The leaflet is the culmination of the year-long South Gate and Coatham Local Heritage Project, and will be available in local libraries.
