THE launch of a £1.2m city learning centre on Teesside is guaranteed to go with a bang next week.

On Friday, February 1, New York percussionist Simone Rebello will be travelling to South Bank for a master class with youngsters from four local primary schools - Atlee Road, Ravensworth, St Mary's and Alderman William Jones.

The special session is one of the highlights of a week-long arts festival at the centre, which has been funded under the Excellence In Cities programme.

The centre has four seminar rooms, a 144-seater auditorium, a recording studio, two computer suites and a cyber cafe.

Director Stuart Nimmo, formerly assistant headteacher of Brierton School, in Hartlepool, said: "The creation of the centre opens up exciting opportunities for everyone in the community.

"The centre will become a focal point for a wide range of learning experiences for people of all ages. We hope as many people as possible will join us for the opening events as a taster of what can be offered."

The centre already has secondary school links with Gillbrook Technology College, Eston Park and St Peter's RC, as well as 13 local primary schools.
