Police are mounting a major initiative to reduce assaults and disorder in Newcastle city centre with a highly visible police presence at key times.
Additional officers will be on patrol during the busiest periods for pubs and clubs, which are increasingly attracting large numbers of drinkers on the Quayside.
Chief Inspector Dave Jackson, Operations Manager Newcastle Central, said: "We want to ensure that Newcastle city centre is a safe environment for residents, workers and people to enjoy socialising in.
"We have been in close contact with licensees within the city centre who are keen to support this initiative together with bar staff and door supervisors.
"The Quayside is a developing area of Newcastle and we want to ensure that it is policed appropriately."
Officers are stepping up their patrols during the evenings when most revellers are out enjoying the night life.
Quilted Camel bar owner and licensee Oliver Vaulkhard said: "We fully support the police in this matter. It is important for everyone to be able to enjoy themselves in a safe environment on the Quayside."
