WORK has started on Darlington's newest school, the first to be built by the borough council since it became a unitary authority in 1997.
The construction of Firthmoor Primary School, which started yesterday, is to be a key feature in the regeneration of the town's Firthmoor estate and will cost £2.1m.
The building, which will provide 300 primary places and 26 nursery places, is scheduled to open in January 2003, replacing the existing school which is due to close at Christmas.
The new school will include an information technology suite, library, a music and art studio and a large school hall with excellent sports facilities.
Councillor Eleanor Lister, the borough council's cabinet member for education, said: "We are confident that the new school will help raise educational achievement in Darlington to the highest possible standards. The school will become an important learning centre for everyone in Firthmoor and will offer new opportunities for lifelong learning and personal development."
