A SQUAD of crimefighters has been established at Middlesbrough in a blitz against burglars.

The ten-strong team of officers from the CID and uniform divisions have been tasked with preventing a rise in burglary that is often seen at this time of year.

Detective Inspector Chris Garner, who is heading the squad, said yesterday that the objective was to drive crime down through intelligence-led enforcement operations and by carrying out high-profile patrols in areas that were particularly at risk of house burglary.

She said: "In the seven days that it has been running, the squad has already arrested 42 people for burglary and handling stolen goods.

"My message to would-be Middlesbrough burglars is that they can expect to be swiftly caught if they choose to operate here."

To complement the planned police activity, Det Insp Garner said the community could play its part in reducing crime.

She said: "It is a sad fact that some residents are giving burglars an easy time of it at the moment.

"This can easily be avoided by householders making sure that they lock the door, or put a chain on, even if they are in."

A haul of recovered property recovered is waiting to be claimed at Middlesbrough police station.
