Cleveland County
Last weekend Cleveland were away to the West Midlands. It was a long trip but well worth it.
The Ladies B got off to a good start. Rhonda Page (16.45) won 3-2, Vee Page (14.35) won 3-1 to put Cleveland two-up before Marge Gunn (15.92) lost 3-0.
But then Molly Pywell (16.01) won 3-2, Babs Evans (19.52) won 3-0 and Lady of the Match Pat A Smith (21.47) won 3-0 to give Cleveland a 5-1 win. Next up were the Mens B. Allan Galley (23.48) won 3-0, Richie Corner (23.18) won 3-1 and Neil Young (25.91) won 3-0. Glynn Neads (24.79) was unlucky to lose 3-2. He had a 111 and a 141 checkout, every leg went with the darts. It was then back to normal service, Paul Skelton (21.57) won 3-1, Man of the Match Dennis Coleman (28.36) won 3-0, Mark Durham (25.95) on his county debut won 3-2, Jim Dunlop (22.43) won 3-0 and Makhan Chahal (20.59) won 3-2. Kevin Taylor (25.67) lost 3-0. Cleveland took the last two games with Carl Smith (26.83) winning 3-2 and Brian Boulton (21.64) won 3-1 to give Cleveland a 10-2 win and overall a lead of 15-3 which was a good lead to take into Sunday's A matches.
Once again the ladies could do no wrong. Pat J Smith (14.71) won 3-2; Jackie Allison (14.03) won 3-1. Claire Stainsby (17.91), playing her first match for the A team, won 3-1 and Lady of the Match (21.78) won 3-0. Jean Hagan (17.18) lost a very close match 3-2 but then Julie Sorby (15.82) won 3-0, taking the final leg with a 120 checkout.
And giving Cleveland a 5-1 win, and an unbeatable lead going into the Men's A match. It's been a lot of years since that last happened.
Glen Durrant (26.68) got the Mens A underway when he won 3-1, including a 125 checkout. But then Mark Eccles (25.76) lost 3-1, Col Johnson (31.63) lost to West Midlands Man of the Match, Ian Jones (32.31) 3-1. Simon Craven (22.69) lost 3-0 and Glenn Moody (28.88) lost 3-1. Cleveland's man of the match Tony Eccles (34.21) won 3-1. Including a 148 and a 143 Checkout. To make the score 4-2 to West Midland at the interval. Tony Mitchell (22.64) pulled one back when he won 3-2 but then Paul Winspear (22.49) lost 3-0, Jim Bannister (22.38) lost 3-1 and Rob Grundy (27.92) lost 3-2. (missed doubles). Gary Stephens (28.15) won 3-2, once again good finishing. A 101 and a 116 checkout in the deciding leg. In the last match Kenny Dobson (22.23) lost 3-2 to make the final score 8-4 to West Midland. But overall a win for Cleveland of 24+3 win bonus points, to 12 points West Midland.
