A RETIRED firefighter whose family has been affected by cancer is trying to drum up money for charity.
Paul Archer will attempt to play the drums for 12 hours in aid of the Cancer Research Campaign.
Mr Archer, 46, from Darlington, will be joined by a host of local groups, including his own band, Big Sigh and the Yawns, to entertain drinkers at the Tap and Spile on Saturday, February 9. If successful, the event could lead a world record attempt.
Mr Archer's father, Gordon, died of cancer at the age of 55, and his brother and sister have also both been treated for the disease.
The Durham University business school graduate said: "There can be few people who have not been touched by this frightening illness. Imagine how terrifying it must be to be told you have a malignant tumour and there is a real chance you could die.
"Imagine how it must feel to undergo chemotherapy, a drastic and very unpleasant procedure, not knowing if it is going to be successful."
The public are invited to attend the evening part of the event, from 8pm, paying an entry fee of £4.
Musicians wishing to accompany Paul between 1pm and 5pm will be welcome. The event starts at noon.
