PEOPLE are being asked for their opinions on a scheme to improve safety on one of Darlington's main roads.

Darlington Borough Council is working to create a Corridor of Certainty scheme In Yarm Road.

The idea behind the scheme is to improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians, cyclists, bus passengers, motorists and residents.

Particular emphasis will be given to vulnerable groups including elderly people, school children and people with disabilities, to ensure they are safe.

As well as making the road safe for pedestrians and cyclists, the scheme will aim to provide better transport facilities.

John Buxton, the council's director of development and environment, said: "One of the core aims of the strategy is to ensure bus passengers have a journey that is reliable, frequent, reasonably priced and, wherever possible, free from the effects of congestion. This includes the provision of high-quality vehicles and waiting facilities, public transport information and integration with the services.

"Much of this, however, can only be achieved in partnership with the bus operating companies."

The plan will also ensure there are good quality signs for road users, and that taxi drivers can collect and deliver their fares at the roadside safely.

Businesses in Yarm Road will also be taken into consideration in the scheme, with shops given adequate loading bays as well as customer car parking.

Consultation is continuing to ensure the views and needs of the community are taken into account when changes are made to the road.

The Corridor of Certainty is expected to run from the Morton Park roundabout, near the Morrisons store, to the inner ring road, in Parkgate.
