A TEAM of girls has won a primary school competition aimed at encouraging children to get involved in engineering.
The team of four from Gurney Pease Primary School, Darlington, beat the school's boys team to win the 8th annual egg race held at Hurworth House Independent School for Boys.
More than 100 entrants from 13 schools were asked to design and make a car out of Lego Technics for the competition.
The vehicle was then tested on a metre-long ramp.
The judges were from the Science Museum in London, the Department for Employment and Education and the University of Teesside. The winning team was: Georgina Lloyd, Nikita Lockerbie, Joanna Cooper and Sally Wheelhouse, who narrowly beat the Gurney Pease boys team by 178 points to 175.
Wendy Bunting, teacher at Gurney Pease, said: "I'm really proud.
"I wasn't surprised, their team work is absolutely brilliant."
The boys' team included Luke Hope (not pictured), Jack Hobbs, Tom Rayner and Dale Mulholland.
The winners each received a £10 book token, with the runners-up getting an £8 voucher.
The host team, Hurworth House, came third.
