RESIDENTS have raised £500 to give an east Durham village surgery an asthma machine.

The new equipment at the Caradoc Surgery, in Wingate, can detect asthma and lung damage caused by the condition, as well as show whether any damage is reversible.

It can also be used to detect and treat other obstructive airway diseases.

The surgery has several patients with lung and chest diseases.

The money was raised by the Wingate, Station Town and Hutton Henry Community Safety and Health Forum.

Local junior school pupils joined in by washing fire engines and the residents of the Gully House and Charlton House sheltered housing complexes held social evenings and pie-and-peas suppers.

East Durham and Houghall Community College donated some cash and funding was obtained from other sources.

The forum has also raised money for dawn-to-dusk lighting and security measures, including door and window locks, for pensioners' homes.
