A COMMUNITY centre could become North Yorkshire's newest arts venue.

Hambleton Community Centre, owned by the district council, is undergoing a £400,000 refurbishment programme during the summer.

On Thursday, councillors told officers to carry out talks with Yorkshire Arts in a bid to transform the venue into a big player on the arts circuit for theatre and concerts.

If the talks are successful, the centre could get a new name to go with its new look. In a report to the council's cabinet, officers recommended that the dowdy community centre tag should be dropped in favour of something of a "higher quality".

The cabinet agreed to apply for planning permission for a £90,000 roof for the venue
